Black tea was first grown in Japan at the end of the 19th century in response to the growing fashion for darker tea in Europe, particularly the UK. As cheaper black tea and a patriotic preference for "colonial" tea grew to dominate, the market demand dwindled. We have not had access or enjoyed Japanese black teas outside of Japan for many generations - which is a huge shame, as you will discover when you try this exquisite loose leaf tea. This is a truly rare tea.

I used to love just blocks away from where Moriuchi Koucha is prepared, but it wasn’t until years later and a thousand mile move that I became acquainted with what has become my favorite tea. I am finding myself stockpiling it so as not to run out in these uncertain times. When that uneasy feeling rises up in me, I stop and have a cup of Moriuchi Koucha and the world sets itself aright and I am ready to forge forth into the unknown future that awaits. I had only tried this Japanese black tea once, at Claridge's in London for afternoon tea last summer. Since then, I have been searching high and low in the US for this exquisite loose leaf tea. At last, I stumbled upon the Rare Tea Company and ordered it. This tea is my drug. It's perfect in the morning or afternoon. It is equally satisfying as an accompaniment to sweets or savory items like the traditional English tea sandwiches. I have never experienced a savory tea before; you can really taste the essence of the enoki mushrooms and the earthy, nutty taste of the walnuts.
