FINANCIAL TIMES

The Number One Earl Grey

Rare Earl Grey is the culmination of many years of blending to create the ultimate expression of a British classic.

Described by the Financial Times as the "number one Earl Grey" in the world.

Pure Earl Grey - no artificial flavours

Real Italian Bergamot

Made from a blend of hand-crafted orthodox tea leaves and top quality bergamot (a natural cross between a bitter orange and a lemon), Rare Earl Grey is a traditional loose leaf tea using the natural citrus oil to subtly scent the tea rather than drown it in chemical flavours.

We do not add any blue cornflowers, which might look pretty but do not impart any flavour. We do not add any pieces of citrus skin to bulk up the weight of the tea.

This is an Earl Grey tea in its purest form.

Why choose Rare Tea Company's Earl Grey Tea?

Our Rare Earl Grey was named best in the world by the Financial Times, with thousands of five-star reviews. It’s a traditional Earl Grey tea, using real bergamot from Calabria Italy, not flavourings. Our Rare Earl Grey uses the best black tea base, not industrial product or tea dust found in tea bags.

Should you put milk in Earl Grey tea?

Absolutely, drink it as you like. Our Earl Grey is blended to be delicious with or without milk - just infuse it a little longer at a higher temperature.

Is our Earl Grey healthier than big brand bags?

Our Earl Grey uses real Bergamot oil from Calabria, Italy - no synthetic flavourings or UPFs. It’s also loose leaf, so no nanoplastics, microplastics, industrial solvents or other chemicals commonly found in tea bags.

How is Rare Earl Grey made?

Our Earl Grey is made from pure Bergamot oil - a citrus fruit from Calabria. Most Earl Grey teas are made with synthetic flavourings and then dried flowers or blue petals are often added as a disguise to low-quality tea, although they add no flavour.

How should I store Rare Earl Grey tea to keep it fresh?

Bergamot oil is volatile, so it is important to keep it airtight in the tin or resealable bag, tightly closed.

Is Rare Earl Grey suitable for vegans or people avoiding allergens?

Yes, our Earl Grey is a handcrafted black tea with pure citrus oil. We can’t speak for other Earl Greys with many flavourings and additives.

How much caffeine is in Rare Earl Grey tea?

Earl Grey is a caffeinated tea. How much caffeine in Rare Earl Grey depends on how you brew it and for how long - if you want lower caffeine, brew it for a shorter amount of time.

Can I buy Rare Earl Grey wholesale for my cafΓ©, hotel, or restaurant?

Absolutely, please visit our Wholesale & Trade page.

What’s the history of Earl Grey tea?

The history of Earl Grey tea is mired in myth - how it became a black tea with bergamot scent is debated. However, there was Charles Grey, Prime Minister of Britain in the late 18th century, who was based in Howick Hall, which remains the seat of the Earls Grey. Despite diligent research, there is no clear connection - an age-old story of using fancy titles to promote and sell.
